Five Flags Theater
The Majestic Theater, rebuilt from a fire in 1910 that destroyed the original building, has history much like the productions it now hosts - ever changing. In its lifetime the building has had a half dozen names and hosted theater, opera, vaudeville shows, movies and musicals. In 1969, the Theater was earmarked for demolition as part of an urban renewal program. Those opposed to the demolition believed the theater was an irreplaceable treasure, and obtained private donations to combine a restored theater with a new exhibition-art facility for an all-purpose civic center. The Civic Center and the Theater are named after the five national flags that have flown over the region since 1673.
