The Inside Scoop on When to Wear Your Engagement Ring, and When to Take it Off.
It is obvious your engagement ring is the most important piece of jewelry you may own. Proper engagement ring care is so important, after all, you will be wearing it every day for the rest of your life.
Believe it or not, knowing when to take off your engagement ring is vital to keeping it pristine and safe for years to come. We get lots of questions on when it is safe to wear your engagement ring, so we are here to answer them all for you right here.
Can you wear your engagement ring in the shower?
Your diamond and ring are a magnet for dust, dirt, oil, etc. Shampoo and Conditioner are designed to remove dust, dirt, oil, etc. It is okay to wear your engagement ring in the shower.
We would rather you wear the ring in the shower than leaving it on the counter for it to potentially be knocked off and misplaced.
Should you take your engagement ring off to wash your hands?
Please wash your hands with your ring on. Just like with showering, the soap you use to wash your hands will help clean your ring.
Never take your engagement ring off and set it on a counter in a public place. It is easy to forget your ring sitting on the counter, and it is easy for it get stolen or misplaced/knocked off.
What about at the gym?
In short, no. Wearing your ring during cardio activities will not harm your ring, but any weightlifting will.
We do not want you to take your ring off at the gym, we want you to leave it at home in storage. This is the best way to ensure your ring stays safe. If you are going to walk on the treadmill and leave – wear your amazing ring. But anything else, we strongly recommend leaving your sparkler at home.
What about hand sanitizer and engagement rings?
Over time, hand sanitizer can damage your engagement ring. The harsh chemicals in hand sanitizer will not cause immediate damage, but it can overtime. The chemicals could break down the metal and make it more prone to damage.
Your ring will have a cloudy experience with excessive use of hand sanitizer. When this happens, bring your ring into McCoy Jewelers and we will clean your ring and make it full of sparkle again.
Can you wear your engagement ring in the pool?
Chlorine can cause damage to your ring overtime. Like hand sanitizer, it could cause your ring to be more prone to damage with excessive exposure to chlorine.
What about at the beach/river?
No. Your fingers shrink in bodies of water, and the way people behave on beaches/rivers/boats make you less likely to pay attention to your ring. Wearing your sparkling engagement ring in big bodies of open water is a big no. There is a major risk to having your ring slide right off without notice. And even if you do notice, you probably will not be able to grab the ring fast enough before the current takes it away.
When you travel?
This depends. When you are traveling for a weekend trip to Chicago, or just for a day of fun with the girls – it is okay to wear your ring. However, when we recommend you leaving your ring at home is when you are traveling to a place where you will be leaving your ring in your hotel room at times.
Believe it or not, when you are wearing a sparkling engagement ring (or even a fake ‘travel’ ring) you are making yourself a target in different areas for theft, assault, etc. We do not recommend even getting a cheap travel ring, it still looks real, which still makes you a target.
It is best to leave your bling at home in a safe or at a bank security deposit box during travel.
Should you sleep with it on?
This is up to you. Your ring is safe on your hand while you sleep. Our motto is the ring is safest on your hand.
Other online places, like “The Knot”, are going to tell you that you could snag your ring – this should not be happening. Any ‘snagging’ your ring is experiencing is a sign that you have a loose prong. Bring your ring in immediately to be checked by a jeweler.
They are also going to tell you that it could ‘slip off’ in your sleep, if your ring is at risk for falling off in your sleep, IT IS WAY TOO BIG. Please come into our shop and we will get your ring to a proper size.
What about household chores?
You should not wear your ring when you are working with very harsh chemicals, especially bleach. You can absolutely wear your ring while doing dishes, or anything along those lines. When you bring deep cleaning with bleach and other chemicals is making your ring more prone to damage overtime.
