We recommend that you speak to your partner’s best friends, or close relatives about the style that person wants. • Set a budget.

Everyone has a budget. At McCoy Jewelers, we have a ring for every hand, and a diamond for every budget. We know that an engagement ring is likely to be one of the biggest purchases of your life. We respect that and will always work within your budget to find your perfect engagement ring.

Pro tip: when setting a budget, do not over buy. Set a budget that is within your means. Your partner will not want you to buy a ring that puts you in a financial bind.  

• Decide on your time frame of wanting to propose.

You may think this is not an important detail, but it is. Jewelry is a different market than electronics. Every day – metal prices go up and down, and diamond prices change often too.

On top of that, different rings take various amounts of time to complete. A custom ring takes longer to create and finish than a ring that we may have in our case. Even different diamond shapes or sizes could take longer to find.

• Look at different stone shapes.

You will read all over the internet about the 4Cs of a diamond, heck, you can see those details on our site too. However, we recommend that being used as a reference guide AFTER you look and learn about diamonds in person. The 4Cs are challenging to understand.

You should absolutely look at the different shapes of diamonds and see which ones you think you could want as your center stone. Then, when you stop into our shop, one of our experts will walk through the cut, color, clarity, and carat of diamonds and help you find your preference for each of those 4Cs.

• Find your favorite jeweler.

• Select your semi-mount.

Now the fun part, you can select your perfect ring. This comes second to your diamond or before, whichever you prefer. At McCoy Jewelers, we start with the semi-mount because it can have some influence on the diamond you select.

• Select your diamond.

At McCoy Jewelers, we will show you all sorts of different options within your budget and help you select the perfect diamond. We will always show you options towards the bottom of your budget, the middle of your budget, and then closer to the top of the budget. You do not always need your entire budget for the perfect diamond and that is why we will show you lots of different options.

• Plan your proposal.

You have selected your ring, put your deposit down, and now you wait for it to be ready for pick up. This can seem like an exceptionally long time because you are so excited to pop the big question. We promise to complete your ring as quickly as possible.

During your wait, you should be finalizing your proposal details (if you are proposing shortly after completion).

Pro tip: Have someone to take a picture whether it is a professional, a waiter, or a relative. The proposal is something you will want to have pictures of down the road.

• Pick up your finished ring.

The moment the ring is ready for pick up, one of our team members will reach out to you. Stop into the store – get your complimentary appraisal, make any additional payments on the ring, get your proposal box, and you are set to go!

Pro tip: have a hiding spot in your mind to make it easy and quick to hide the ring while you wait for your proposal date to approach.
